This move was great for Apple both in terms of quality control and sales. Everything they refurbish gets handled by their own experts, and sold through their own store. This means they can offer the AppleCare warranty the refurbs, which is also a nice feature.

If Apple's holding all the cards on refurbished Macbooks not only are they difficult to find outside of Apple, the prices they demand are not being adjusted by a competitive market. It's as much about making sure you're getting the support you need from the company you eventually go with - and choosing to create sustained competition in the marketplace.
